Our neighborhood (not an HOA) pond has been taken over by swans (just two) who have kicked the ducks off. So our neighborhood ducks have taken to nesting and hatching further up the street (the people by the pond actually say they miss them, which is odd for Muscovy).
Last year, Leah (my roommate started naming the ducks, of which, we usually have about 6 roaming around, but they have started to disappear) hatched 14, but, we think predators got them - there were 14, 9, 2 - by day 10, all gone.
This year she hatched 11 across the street, and by day 3, decided to spend the nights next to out front door. Okay...
Day 12.... all 11 are still alive.
They are adorable, but I have a house Muscovy, and I know how much they poop, and 11 Muscovy in addition to the 3 or 4 currently roaming the neighborhood might change our neighborhood's feeling about ducks. (We are currently Pro but we know what it's like elsewhere.)
They can't go back to the pond area (where we used to see 14, now 0).
We know there is an overabundance in many areas, and we know they made a law to try to fix that.
However, IF the ducklings continue to survive, and we know someone who wants to take some, how old do they have to be to leave Mama without the heart-rending peeping, and a angry Mama duck?
We are enjoying their presence for the moment, we just don't want our neighbors to turn anti-Muscovy (which they currently aren't. Though one has been seen chasing the males away, as they frighten the Mama. (I do it too.))
We would like to end up with 3 or 4 (in addition to the ones that currently roam here).
We are near Largo, FL.
