pros... you have a flock protector, they can be very pretty and you can have fertile eggs when you want more chicks... cons... they can be both noisy and aggressive with both hens and humans

For the record, I love my roosters to death, I find them often more friendly then the hens, in fact my one rooster would even jump into my lap, and yes, he lives in the barn but he recently passed away. hmm.. like chickenbythesea said, They protect the flock and fertilize the eggs. The only con I have ever seen is that, if you have to many, they can be ruff on the hens. But if you only have 1 and you have at least 6 hens to go with him, it should be fine. Well there's my 2 cents. I love my roosters and support them 100%

i like my rooster very much! he protects the baby chicks from the hens who pick on them. the only thing is he starts crowing at 4 am. i keep him around because he has a high voice so it is very quiet by the time the sound hits the house.

i'm so sorry for your loss

We love our roosters. (have two bantams) They alert every time anything flies overhead. (one even squeals at airplanes...

) I feel a lot better about my flock foraging about the lawn all day with the roosters around. They are very sweet and, just as the hens, will sit in your lap like precious little pets. Our city permits roosters but has a noise ordinance. (We bring them indoors in the morning to let them crow until their hearts are content) -husband and I enjoy the early morning crows over coffee, and my two kids sleep on undisturbed.
