Yay for Dallas! He proved himself to be brave despite his previous experience with the raccoon. John Wayne is quoted as saying "Courage is being scared to death - but saddling up anyway."
The populations of opossums & raccoons have increased along with development, many of their own predators have gone and they can also find more food & habitat for themselves, and thus, have larger & healthier litters. Opossums have preyed on my flock, frequently going after brooding hens for their eggs or baby chicks & ducklings. The female opossums with young in their pouch seem, understandably, more hungry than most, and more aggressive in their hunts. It sure is a sad sight to see the babies in a dead opossum, but better to be rid of them now than later when they're grown and preying on your flock.
