The populations of opossums & raccoons have increased along with development, many of their own predators have gone and they can also find more food & habitat for themselves, and thus, have larger & healthier litters. Opossums have preyed on my flock, frequently going after brooding hens for their eggs or baby chicks & ducklings. The female opossums with young in their pouch seem, understandably, more hungry than most, and more aggressive in their hunts. It sure is a sad sight to see the babies in a dead opossum, but better to be rid of them now than later when they're grown and preying on your flock.

Life in the animal world is a life and death struggle - all animals eventually die - one of the most painless way for them to die is to be shot - to ignore this fact is to not face reality - I watch a TV program - Discover Wild - where you see animals eating another while it is still alive - we need to see these things so we really know what happens in the wild - so many people eat meat and never think of the fact that some animal was slaughtered -

My dog pinned a possum in the backyard about a week ago, and we took care of that one, but it had babies too, only the babies were a little more grown. My dog has caught 4 of the babies so far and has only killed 1 yesterday. All the other times she lets me know and I take care of them, I feel bad killing a possum the size of a kitten because they are cute, but I've lost many chickens to possums.

Sorry about your dog getting hurt, I hope he has had all his shots and you get the raccoon. He will be back. I think you did the right thing with the opposum it would be her against your chickens. Good shot.
