Protesting backyard chickens as cruelty

I don't see the problem with accidently getting a rooster in the mix.....chop its darn head off, pluck it, and just like magic......DINNER!!!!! And if you're over run with roosters at your farm, butcher them, that's what farmers do and then donate the meat....I'm sure the homeless shelters will appreciate the fresh meat.
There are some people who don't believe the responsible solution is simply "chopping off their darn heads." And there are some people don't have issues with "chopping off their darn heads," but do have objections with an urban next door neighbor killing animals in the backyard just a few feet away.

Our organization is not a farm. We're a sanctuary. We respect all lives here. And so do the people who abandoned their chickens with us- they've recognized the animal as an individual and realized they're not ethically at ease with taking away their lives.

(And we also have a large garden with the produce donated to food banks, so no animals are necessary for that.)

You are most certainly entitled to your beliefs. I think the jest of this thread is someone with your beliefs dictating what others do in their own backyards. (Privacy fences make great neighbors).

You brought up the solution as slaughter, and I am simply explaining that not all people are comfortable with killing the animals. Hence, we get multiple calls every week from people who need to abandoned the chickens but do not want to kill them. Regardless of anyone's personal belief-this is the reality of the situation. People can not keep the chickens for whatever reason and do not want to kill the chickens for whatever reason so sanctuaries are overburdened with urban birds. Not once did I "dictate" someone can't kill an animal, please don't accuse me of something I did not do.

The thread asked for opinions on the topic and I am offering the perspective from the "other side," the side that deals with all city's unwanted birds. Not once have I dictated, or judged, or placed blame, in fact, I was intentionally both grateful for and respectful of those who are clearly taking good care of their birds.

I assumed folks would be up to having mature conversations without discussing chopping off heads or accusing me of dictating behaviors. But unfortunately this wasn't the case and I feel that not everyone is open to hearing other perspectives so I'll stop my responses now. At the very least, I hope I was able to share a new perspective to at least one listening ear.
