I agree with the others - the protruding screw definately can injure a chicken.
My *FAVOURITE*, sweetest chicken was injured on a protruding screw - she had pretty big gash in her leg which we had to bandage (first chicken injury!) for a few days. It turned out okay in the end, but better safe than sorry.
BTW: this screw was only sticking out while under construction - we never thought they would hurt themselves when they weren't even "using" it yet. We cut ours off with the Dremmel.
