I am very proud of how well the new chicks are getting along with the rooster. Yesterday, we took our second field trip around the house. Two of the chicks got separated from the others, and needed some help re-uniting with the group. They spend much of their time in the woods. Being Speckled Sussex chicks, their feathers seem to give them good camouflage from predators. Brutus for the most part, has been keeping an eye out for danger. He sometimes gets distracted(i.e. Either by playing call and response with another rooster in the neighborhood or looking for his own bugs, which he likes to show to the others. ) from his duties, and needs reminding. The chicks seem to instinctively know to stay near or in the woods. I thought a predator was about to attack them the other day. I saw something dart out of the woods. It turned out to be a rabbit.LOL. You can't be to too cautious, though.

Look how busy they are. Yeah, I know about those distracted roosters. They have so many things on their mind. Sex and food comes before predators.

You have a nice looking flock. How old are your chicks? I have some that are 2 weeks old.
My roo is doing really good with my little ones too. I was so worried that he would hurt them
but actually he seems to want to feed them. The little ones are not too sure about taking
what he offers, they would much rather have what mama digs up.

My chicks are 7wks old. Yeah, I did some introductions early on, and they are getting along fine. The chicks steer clear of the rooster, if they feel threatened. One bold chick, goes right up to Brutus and pecks at his face and comb. He meanwhile, stands completely still while she examines him. I get concerned, that she is gonna end up getting mauled. Thank goodness, he has been a very tolerant rooster.
