Providing water in the duck pen

Heated buckets are on my list for next winter. This one so far has been a learning experience. I don't keep water in my duck house either except during that super cold snap but I had a plastic bin under the bucket to catch the water. Still was not ideal.

I water twice a day here in our freezing temps. Water bowls freeze solid. I feed and water outside. It's a myth that ducks choke without water. Free range Ducks go hours without a drink. Definitely like all animals they need water though. Mine do great on my schedule.
According to the article below, they actually can choke- they use the water to clean out a mucus membrane that can get clogged with dirt or food
The article is more about providing them swimming water, but does say they can choke without being able to clean their bills
Free ranging them they probably can do this in whatever water there happens to be around
