Puffed up Lethargic Hen --- Please Help!!!

I have a few in the flock that have done this in the last few weeks. I finally got to worm them all. This morning only one was sorta lethargic, but doing better than before. The rest of the flock is zipping around like well, you know. Chickens with their ......

I have been reluctant to worm the whole flock since the Wazine has a 2 week withdrawal period, and I don't want to lose all those eggs.

Can you continue to eat the eggs with any of the other wormers? Is there a more natural approach?

I've never thought it a good idea to worm chickens unless you have a positive faecal done by an avian vet, but it's a personal decision. Chickens can carry a small load of worms without issue, and many wormers out there are basically ineffective on most worms; sorry to say, Wazine is one of them. Most folks use Ivermec Eprinext cattle wormer.

There is ALWAYS a withdrawal period. Two weeks seems to be the minimum that most folks go by.

Ground raw pumkin seed will help keep worms at bay; however, it is not actually a "wormer" and will not kill a large load of worms. The best thing, really, is to have a faecal done by an avian vet to see if there is a worm overload and, if so, which type, so you can choose a wormer that's specific for that worm.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Wazine has a 2 week withdrawal period for birds being raised for meat. It says on the bottle- not for use in egg laying hens. You have NO drug choices for deworming your birds, if you want a published withdrawal time. All of the drugs people are recommending are off label for egg layers. Not a big deal if you use them in show birds, breeding birds, or you are eating the eggs yourself. FARAD is more worried about the unknowing public getting eggs with residues. If you sell eggs, you should not use any of these meds. Most people deworming with piperazine or pyrantel or a bendazole drug or ivermectin- toss the eggs for two weeks, as this represents a yolk follicle to laid egg time frame. I don't know enough about any natural approaches to offer any advice there.
