Pull or roo Plus intro

I’ve had two hatchmate cockerels fight until they were both at death’s door - they may not be that crazy, but their attitude towards each other is likely to change to some extent once their hormones kick in.
Oh wow, already learning things here! Why did I not think this was ever a possibility. Could you seperate them?

I’ve also noticed your a “flockwit”, having a little giggle at that

Sure, you can separate them, should you wish and have the set-up. They may not be quite as crazy as those two i had. I have had other cockbirds that were not quite so ridiculous - time will tell.

Hi guys!

I’m Susie, a newbie! I’m in Perth Australia and recently added a golden laced Wyandotte and a Plymouth Rock to our fam.
It’s myself, hubby rocky, girl sienna 2.5 years and Elijah boy 5 months living in surburbia but wishing to be in the country on a semi self sufficient property. ( hence username haha)
Starting the dream with just two chickens. My guess is the Plymouth Rock is a pullet and Wyandotte rooster. Anyone wish to correct me?
They are 6 weeks old today.
I am terrible at sexing but :welcome

Welcome to Backyard Chickens, Susie! We are glad you joined the flock! :welcome BYC is a helpful site providing all of the information you need to know about poultry. There is always space for members on the BYC roost! :highfive:
Although I hate to say it, both of your juveniles look like cockerels. Feather growth, comb size and those thick legs pretty much indicates it at such an early age. Maybe if fighting starts to occur, You could keep a cockerel in each separate pen and introduce some Barred Rock females and Wyandottes females with each cockerel, that way you could start a breeding flock. Probably a silly suggestion.:D

Hope you enjoy it here as much as we all do!

I have the same dream as you!!

Don't worry about gender too much right now. I can't zoom in on your pics very well (next time upload and click "full image") but they're different breeds so their development will likely also be different. Hatchery chicks aren't usually bred to a perfect standard, so often there's many variables like comb type and leg coloring. All my birds are hatchery quality... they still make great pets!

I also have a (blue) wyandotte and was almost certain she was a boy as her comb and wattles were developing so much faster than the others. You really won't be able to get a good assessment until around 14 weeks. For your SLW, the start of whitish saddle feathers and black iridescent tail feathers will be a telltale sign of a cockerel.

Here's a pic of mine at 4 wks and 10 wks. She's a big fluffy pullet for sure now!

Welcome to BYC! Yes, I agree with Cynthia. I think you've got them sexed correctly. The barred rock looks like your pullet, and the Wyandotte like your cockerel. I hope you will stick around and enjoy the fun and information BYC has to offer.

Thanks Jed! I wish I got more than two. If I get another batch now will they be ok to mix together at 6 weeks and 12 weeks. My instinct tells me no. How would I go about this?

Thank you so much! What beautiful chickens u have. I can see how addictive it can become as a hobby. They truly are wonderful to keep. They were my first pets as a child so quite nostalgic for me.

I wish I got more than two chicks. I just want two - three females and that’s it as my yard doesn’t allow for a big pen ( however they will free range all day every day). Any advice in getting new chicks to add to the flock?
