Pullet, 24 Wks, Heart is Racing (UPDATE: She Just Died)

So sorry to hear about your loss.

Thanks, all of you. After much reading and thinking, I believe we've concluded that this was indeed a heart defect, though probably more a fluke than something heritable. Cassidy's sisters are gorgeous and healthy and their body size is what it should be. We think her smaller size was due to her heart not working properly and coming up to the point of lay put too much strain on it.

The heart defect definitely sounds the most plausible Cyn. Poor girl... I guess we both are going to be sitting and waiting anxiously now for spring to arrive. I'm right there with you Cyn!

I am so sorry it does sound like she was just wrong somewhere inside. I can't wait to hear about what you will be hatching in spring.

Henry

Henry, right now, for myself, just Delawares, but I will be hatching some Blue Orpingtons and Barred Rocks for BYCers to pick up here at the house. My laying flock is full now, so I really dont need more for myself. Just want a good solid start on these quality Dels.

Cyn, really sorry about your loss. I know she had a healthy environment and a caring chicken mum.

With the fast heartrate and breathing like that, I would have said shock, and probably so since she bled out the mouth. She was probably bleeding internally , which made her shocky. She might have had an aneurism or suffered some internal injury.

Anyway, it's a sad thing, and I'm really sorry

I appreciate your kind words, Karen. They were just getting to be so beautiful, too. I went out to check on her sister, Kira, and she squatted for me for the very first time ever. She seems very lost right now. Guess I'll have to pay lots of attention to her.
