Hello all,
I have 3 pullets at the the moment, and I noticed the combs for my girls are developed, and a light red color, but not the deep red color that my neighbors are. They are exactly 5 months(20 weeks) old. The comb seems to be ashy, like its dry. They are on 20 percent chick starter/ grower, get scratch and catfish pellets as a treat. No eggs yet, but one has been squatting for the past few days. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Urbanduckfarmer

How can I upload pictures?
Once the picture is on your computer (or whatever you're using to enter your posts,) click on the "Upload a File" button at the bottom of your post block (right next to "Post Reply.") That will walk you through the linking process. It's pretty straightforward. Post back if you still have trouble ... I'm sure someone can talk you through it.

Ashy is an odd description. A pullet's comb will grow and turn bright red soon before she lays. Up until then the comb should be smaller and pale. Do you want to send some pictures?
Actually, "ashy" is a pretty reasonable descriptor for a bird out of production(young, brody, old, molting)....they are small, dry, etc vs the plump, waxy, vibrant appearance of a bird in production

Here is one of my hens. Sorry about the quality, was a bit dark still. The dryness look is on the comb of all my hens.
