Pullet died - murdered by feeder!

I'm kind of a newbie to this so forgive me if this sounds stupid. I did not want to constantly be adding feed to one of those so what I did was to buy an 8ft. length of 6" PVC and fed it into a bowl. I made two of these and attached them to the coop wall with screws and strapping iron. I would however do one thing different. I will be adding an elbow and another foot or so to the bottom that will extend out. I will drill 3-4 large holes in it and put a cap on the bottom to keep the feed from sliding right out lol. I've had a few issues with my chickens pulling the pans out from under the PVC and spilling their feed all over (those clever girls). This is very inexpensive and easy to make. Most big hardware stores will cut the PVC for you. Hope this helps!!! Very sorry for your loss

I have the same feeder, but when the feed started to not be so high in the container, it didn't seem to spill to the bottom easily and spread out to the edges like it's supposed to. I got a metal funnel, cut off the spout part, plugged up the hole, and glued it with gorilla glue to the bottom of the feeder, so the feed spills out to the edges better. Works great.

I'm sorry to hear that. We had ones with holes for the chickens to put their heads through but as they got bigger we took the top part off so they wouldn't get their heads stuck. Now we use dog dishes for the feed, however they do knock the feed everywhere but at least they can't get hurt. Hope this helps.

How awful for you and your baby! I would most certainly call the manufacturer and tell them and write a letter too. They need to be aware and now that we know others will live.

Thank you for sharing and I hope you find a better feeder.

Sounds like a pretty freak accident, I've used those feeders before and never had an issue. Silkies aren't known to be the smartest birds. Theres going to be an accident for everything, you can't prevent everything.

Sorry for your loss

I'm so sorry.

We have the same type of feeder and I admit I worried about that too. We set it at the smallest opening and put it up high so they can't easily reach where the gap is.

Thanks, we bought the pipes and the caps etc, there is a pretty long thread on here about them. I was going to implement that style of feeding over the summer but never got around to doing it. I think I will ask the hubby to get going on this project!

I would agree with you if this wasn't the second time it happened, and if I didn't google it and see others have had the same issue. But, thank you.

I was thinking about mine and if there were a chance that it may or could happen to my girls but I put a large high lip pan under it so I do not think it could happen like it happened to you. You may want to try this and it will work for you. A big catcher pan.
