Pullet has swollen eye

Well now. I discovered how Canela got her eye hurt. Apparently my chickens didn't get along as well as I thought, as tonight, when I was taking Canela out to the mango tree I caught Brown Sugar attacking her, and you guessed it... going for her eyes. So much for peanut butter and jelly. The largest hen in the yard viciously going after the tiniest.
Brown Sugar, my semi-recently started production red pullet, has been showing signs of reproductive disorders, lay every day for a week or two, then nothing for a week or two... When I cracked her eggs open, the yolks were dark orange with gummy browner (much darker brownish orange) spots. I boiled up her eggs figuring that I could at least feed them to the animals... Uh... nope... The yolks when hard boiled for the same amount of time I've cooked eggs for nearly 60 years... were not only encircled with green, but had green 'ribbons' throughout the yolk area when you cut them open. The green was so vivid that you could see it even before taking the cooked albumen off. The yolks were also misaligned, as if attached to the air sac.
Now, since Brown Sugar was already showing some significant signs of reproductive abnormalities and I caught her in the act of viciously attacking Canela... I put her down and did an at home necropsy on her.
She had an overabundance of fat on the abdomen, which struck me as odd as they don't get treats often, and when they do it's something nutritious and/or low fat; something that their feed lacks, so more of a supplement than a treat. Her liver, though of good texture was yellowing. Her heart appeared normal. Her lungs were HUGE, mostly bubblegum pink, but had a tan/brown edge on the top edges (towards her head side) that I've not seen before in many years of keeping chickens. Her waiting egg yolks had various shades of something in them. Some brown spots. Some pus spots (light yellow waxy globules). Her gizzard had grass, weeds, papaya seeds and grit. The papaya seeds surprised me, as I've not served them papaya for about a month and the seeds appeared intact.
What do you think? Salpingitis, even though she's was under a year old? Cancer? Something else? This is two production reds in the past year that have had reproductive disorders, not from the same hatch. I'm thinking on not buying another of this breed.

I'm so sorry to hear about your Brown Sugar:hugs

Did you happen to take any photos?
I'm for sure not a necropsy expert - @Eggcessive @coach723 and @casportpony may recognize more from your description.

The pus spots (yellow waxy globules)? Could be Salpingitis or egg matter in the abdomen, hard to know.
Waiting egg yolks of various shades, to me sounds like Cancer - see if anything in the first post of this thread looks familiar

I do agree, a hen that is suffering from reproductive issues can seem to have a personality change - I had a SLW that seemingly suddenly went quite aggressive overnight, she would attack everyone including my very large rooster at the time, he would beat her down and she would come back for more. I tried various methods to see if I could correct the behavior but she just got worse, so I finally put her down. The poor thing had cancer and some egg matter in the abdomen.

Yeah, I'm thinking cancer of the ovaries. I didn't take photographs as I live alone and I was wrist deep in chicken innards. You know the pus you get from the core of bumblefoot, that yellow waxy stuff? I found stuff like that IN the some of the forming yolks in her. Other forming yolks had brown spots. I closely examined the rest of her reproductive tract and found no evidence of tumor or dysfunction. She had a soft shelled egg in her shell gland that appeared normal. Nothing was lodged in her vaginal canal. The discoloration of the one edge of both lungs was alarming. Aside from the lay daily for a week or two, then stop for a week or two... then resume laying... and stopping... was the only real symptom. I didn't see evidence of a tumor or blockage to address the on again, off again, with her laying. She had good droppings, clean butt feathers, acted healthy... but after my last production red's reproductive problems I knew better. I knew she wasn't right. And then she up and tried to blind poor little Canela (again).

Poor little Canela. She's so adorable. Now that her attacker is out of the picture I hope she has a smooth/easy recovery.

That's really annoying they wouldn't sell you the dog eye ointment because you said it was for a chicken. At this point I never give people more information than they need. Just makes trouble. The less they know the better.

Do you have Tractor Supply Co. in Panama? (I doubt it, but McDonald's seems to have made it everywhere, so you never know)

No, no Tractor Supply Co. We have Melo as the big store on the block, with less than a handful of other vendors (who sell the same feed as Melo, but ask for more money for it). As for McDonalds, we do have one, but the taste is not the same as in the USA, and the 'dollar menu' is more like the $6 dollar menu for the same items. We use U.S. Dollars here. I ~wish~ we had a Taco Bell... Man oh mighty... what I'd give for some taco taco tacos!

If anyone around you sells Terramycin eye ointment that is the good stuff, Neosporin is fine too though, as was mentioned earlier. I'm not sure if any store around you carries it. I'm not familiar with Melo.

IMHO, McDonald's food is garbage. I always feel like I'm going to die after I eat it. I hadn't had any for years and then my brother wanted to go so I took him and got some for myself as well since I hadn't eaten yet. Big mistake. :sick Never again.

I doubt the quality is any better, but I do admit to liking Taco Bell and Burger King

Update: Canela's eye is looking so much better today! She's almost back to normal and she still allowed me to pick her up and examine her today! I guess she really does know that I have her best interests at heart! :celebrate She's also hanging out with her flock mates again, instead of isolating herself. I believe she's gonna make it, and believe she'll have a full recovery. Should something change, I'll update again.

Wonderful news! I'm glad to hear that Canela is doing better :)
Thank you for the update.
