Just purchased a mottled houdans pullet from the state fair (1st place!)

She seemed fine the first few (also cooler) days. We dusted her for lice today.... But before we got her out of the coop we noticed she was breathing out of her mouth.

She did for most parts of the day. Off and on. No other symptoms that I can tell...

Any thoughts are appreciated :)

I'm sorry, I'm a Brit & 80 degrees doesn't mean much to me! Was it quite warm? Was she in the sun a lot? When chickens are hot, they open their beaks & pant a bit like a dog. Totally normal.

If she wasn't warm, most likely either
A) blocked nose from a reaction to bedding material
B) blocked nose due to respiratory infection
C) gape worm.

80 Farenheit is roughly 27 degrees Celsius. A fairly warm day for October.

Ah, thank you! That's definitely warm enough to bring on a bit of panting, especially if she was lounging in the sun. I wouldn't worry at all :)

Yes she was just panting. They will also hold their wings out from their body to let air get to the bare skin under there.

Just make sure she has plenty of water and shade.

My chickens are hot every day here in Thailand. They like me to spray some water on an area of ground in the shade, so it is like a damp patch. Then they will scratch about in it and sit on the cool damp earth.
