Pullet is throwing head back, doesn't get up and stretches legs out.

Having had straw, very nice hay, and (horse bedding type) pine shavings available to me - I completely agree with Ms. Damerow on this one from experience.

Additionally, because of the curing process, straw is filled with mildew spores that only need a little moisture to activate. Pine is different.

It is hard to tell but I think the clicking noise comes from her head. I checked her mouth and didn't find any white stuff. It looked normal.

I found out why the oxine wasn't delivered...my credit card company wouldn't authorize the purchase since it was out of the ordinary for my regular purchases. I would have been nice if someone called to let me know.

I can't find Duramycin 10 but my local feedstore has Gallimycin. Would this be okay? If not, do you know an website where I can buy it and maybe I can get the probios and oxine too.

I actually think her shaking is more like palsy now that you have described it. Her movement is like a shiver and she twists her head down at the same time. It only lasts a couple of seconds but I don't think she is controling it herself.

I found another one of my chickens congested and sneezing and has diarrhea. Should this chicken have duramycin too? She is also twelve weeks old but double the size of Abagail and she has no problems with walking.

I have taken pics of Abagail but I don't know how to post them. If anyone knows please let me know.

thanks for all your help.

I've finally figured out how to post pics. Here they are:

Does anyone know of a Canadian supplier of medicine for chickens. I can't seem to locate one and I'm looking for oxine ah. I found an American site and the price was only 24.99 but after shipping it came to 68.00!

I can't find duramycin or oxine in Canada. Does anyone know the ingredients in these products...maybe they are here in Canada but have different names.

thanks

Gallimycin is aureomycin, so that's fine - yes.

If she keeps her foot like this, she has a B vitamin deficiency. I suspect she might have issues with all her oil vitamins (except possibly D).

I'd seperate Abigael and the other hen - and keep them separate from one another.

I'd do the same treatment for both of them: Aureomycin in the water for no less than 7 days, vitamins (see below), and probiotics (also below) with VetRx swabs for the nostrils if you can get VetRx there (any kind - cat, rabbit, poultry ... or Marshal Pet Peter Rabbit Rx from the pet store).

Vitamins:
- Polyvisol without iron (baby vitamins, found in the vitamin section not baby section) 3 drops daily for the bigger bird, 2 drops for the smaller
- Vitamin E (400 to 700 IU oil capsules, vitamin sections of stores) slit end of capsule - use a dropper with withdraw 2 drops for the baby, put the rest in the bigger bird's mouth
- Probiotics (acidophilis capsules or tablets from vitamin section of store) 1/2 contents of whichever (crushed or emptied) onto food daily or in a little wet treat, or on a tiny bit of bread, or boiled egg yolk, or cooked oatmeal - whatever they'll eat.
- Vitamin B complex tablets (1/2 one crushed into powder, mixed with wet treat) daily for smaller bird.

The E vitamin helps neurological issues and inflammation (of sinuses and neuro system)
Polyvisol contains vitamin A for respiratory healing, B for walking, more E, and other vitamins to round it out. Oil vitamins are most easily dissolved from prepared feeds. D will help if the younger bird has rickets.
Acidophilis capsules: live bacteria like probios - only easier to find; for secondary diarrhea prevention d.t. respiratory drainage and antibiotics
Vitamin B = specificially to treat the inability of this chick to walk.

I'd do everything for one week, taper off the vitamins on week 2.

I'd have to ask on Oxine - it's a unique product, the only one that I believe can be misted.
Vetrx is 3.3% (v/v) alcohol U.S.P., Canada balsam, camphor, oil of origanum, oil of rosemary, corn oil.. Canada might have some other rabbit, chinchilla product that is similar. It used to be called "Save the baby"for babies so checking the children's section and adults cold remedies might also work.

I'd also watch all your other birds for symptoms - treat them all the same (minus the B vitamin) if they come down with it.

you can use VirkonS (be sure to get the "S" product) for all that oxine does... it is available in every country

Virkon-S seems to have some capabilities that Oxine doesn't.

Were you planning on misting it though, or just disinfecting?

I was planning on misting it to help with the respiratory problem.

I was also wondering if I should go out and buy her the vitamin E oil capsule. The vitamin E with selenium I bought is in tablet form. They didn't have oil capules with selenium. Is the oil option more important than the selenium?

thanks

Well, I think it depends. I like a one-time treatment with the E-selenium (with selenium being under 50 micrograms - aka mcg, not mg) and then following up with the E straight. If I had to choose, I'd do the E straight now.

From what I've gathered lately with E and neurological cases, using E with fats is a more effective way of making sure it absorbs - so I like the fat to be with the E. I also just prefer any oil vitamin stored in an oil form.
