Pullet or Cockerel?

Just that I heard that they are more aggressive and we are so new to the Chicken World! Can you have a Rooster in with your girls if you do not wish to raise baby chicks?
Aggression is a very real possibility, sadly, and something those who keep them must be prepared for. However, this isn't always the case. Some of my very best, most affectionate birds are roosters. :) I will never be without one.

Of course! Simply don't allow the girls to incubate eggs, if possible. :) Be sure to collect everything from underneath your broodies each day, and chicks should be averted.

Yes, but you need a high ratio of hens to roos, so the hens don't get too beat up from the mating. I have 24 chickens, 3 of which are 7 1/2 month old cockerels. The boys have shown zero aggression as of yet. My husband and I spend a lot of time with the chickens, and everyone is in a huge coop with huge run. We collect the eggs several times a day, and there's no way to tell which eggs are fertilized. It can work!!! Blessings!

Thanks for all the helpful information....based on this, I think we will be keeping Braveheart and hope for the best! I think the older gals (possibly 1 1/2 yrs old) will keep him in line!:wee:yesss:

FYI, if these are Welsummers, they are in the Continental class of chickens. In my experience the Continental roosters are not prone to beat up their hens in mating.
