Thanks everyone for the expert opinions. After much more crowing this week, we found a ranch-y type place that would take in our two fellows and dropped them off there this afternoon - definitely down a few pegs in the cushy lifestyle, but lots more chicken friends for them to hang out with. And the little white rooster dispelled any doubts we had about his gender by immediately finding the biggest rooster at the place and facing off with him. Hopefully within a few days they'll have forgotten all about us - even though they followed us to the door when we left and looked at us all long-necked and sad because they were ready to go home too. Who would have thought roosters could have such heart-wrenching powers! Then went and bought a couple other young pullets (definitely! - one's even laying eggs already). We introduced them to our one lonely remaining girl at bed time, and after a very little perfunctory ruffing up and pecking, they all climbed up into the coop and went to sleep! We're hoping it's still so calm in the morning...
