I have a 10 week CCL pullet (Fancy) who seems to be having issues cooling off tonight. According to the thermometer in the coop it is 78F. The high was around 94F today, so it was pretty hot and the girls were panting this evening. It has been hot all week and the high was 100F on Friday. I've made sure their water is cool, put ice blocks in the coop/run, and turned on their mister. This is my first time with chickens, but it seems odd to me that only one of my pullets is panting tonight when the sun is down and the other four are fine. My main concern is that there may be some underlying health reason causing her to handle the heat less well. I mean my Bielefelder is handling the heat better! Please tell me I am worrying too much lol.

It could be an illness, but it could just be that individual bird doesn't tolerate heat well. I have a production red (Jessamine) who starts panting well before the rest of the flock does and sometimes she has her wings still held out at bedtime. I also gave a Welsummer (Bryony) who pants so much when it gets hot that she makes noise - like bawking and panting simultaneously. It's an awful sound.

If you are worried, you can try bringing her inside for a bit to see if that perks her up.

It was 104 today. I hate summers because of how badly summer treats my chickens. I ended up installing an air conditioner in their coop.

Thanks for the info! Fancy is doing well, I think she is just handling the heat less well than the others. This coming weekend looks awful! The forecast says 100 on Saturday, and next Wednesday 108! I'm going to set up my dog kennels this week so the girls can be inside during the hottest parts of the day.

That's love because she's doing well, not because the sun apparently wants to kill you.

Good idea bringing them in, imho. I put A/C in my coop. I'd bring them in, but there are too many of them.
