No need to apologize- we're all looking for experiences to share and info to fix up our birds, and I rather enjoy all the extra long posts! I'm glad your hens are OK- I hope I too can somehow curb the picking and bloodletting without resorting to "chickee-chainmail."

I'm up for that- the saddles I made were fleece and too wimpy to be protective… we need something TOUGH. Kind of like, since I overdid the blu-kote, Chickeepoo's skin is like tough leather where she got plucked and pecked… not to mention the color of Passionate Plumberry.

I've eaten the eggs and the birds who've been blue koted at one point in life. I wouldn't sell them, within a month or so, but for my own consumption, I'm not allergic to any blue kote ingredients so chow down.

Most things say never use on food animals if poultry to cover the manufacturers rear because they just don't know what the side effects are. Kind of like withdraw for a month after giving sulfa drugs because there are a good number of people allergic to sulfa dugs. It is up to you though if you want to take the risk, but personally feel it isn't a problem. I know some have put blue kote on themselves too in a rush to get something on a wound.

Pullet - You give me hope. Maybe I'll reconsider the blu-kote. I've seen another post that someone simply used blue food coloring. Whatever. I think I'll still try the pine tar. Heck, I've even seen someone recommending plain old vaseline.

Yes, my chickens have 12 ft PER BIRD in the coop and another 12 ft PER BIRD in the run. Space isn't tight. They have access to their run all day. When inside, they have two large windows for sunshine. They eat layer feed at will. I give them BOSS twice a day as a treat. I just don't know what to do. I thought I was doing everything right.

I am having the same problems with the bare spots, some
are about the size of a quarter, some bigger
I have a RIR rooster, this is my first time with chickens
I have 5 rir, 5 buffs, 5 speckled, 5 isa browns, 5 austra
I heard the rir are pretty tough on the girls
so should I take him out of the pen and put betadine
pine tar and give them some kitten chow, or leave him
in the pen and tend to their wounds, no bleeding or breaking of skin yet...................
boy I can't wait till spring when they'll have more to do
