pullet with swollen eye ***HELP***

I have a 2 month old Welsummer chick. About 2 weeks ago I noticed the skin between her eye and her beak was very swollen. The next morning it went away and I assumed she was just stung by a bee or something.

But I found her again tonight with the same bump on the same side. It is a very hard bump, and even the inside of her mouth is swollen. There is a lot of liquid in her eye and the bump is almost pushing her eye into her head so she can't see very well.

What's going on??? Any ideas? What do I do? I thought it might be something that needed to be drained or something, but the bump is so hard. I'm confused.

Hmmm. Wonder if you could try some warm compresses on that spot.

I dont know what the bump could be other than a duct or something is clogged.

Is it like a zit or a boil in that it has a place where you can see it needs to be popped or is it just a smooth bump?

As little as she is, you could probably do it with a cotton ball or even a Q-tip.

tried the compress... not much change. it is even very swollen around her beak... the other side of her face is fine...

there is a clear, kind of gooey liquid coming from her eye, but when i squeeze or apply a little pressure to the bump, nothing more really comes out.

she seemed to appreciate the compress, so i will keep doing it for a few days. i have her in a cage now alone, which is sad, but she is hard to catch, and i want to keep an eye on her the next few days at least.

And she has no other symptoms right? No sneezy, raspy breathing?

The ooze isnt stinky is it?

Maybe a little triple antibiotic on the bump. If its an infection of some sort, that may help.

Keep checking in to see if others have some ideas...

slightly raspy breathing which seems like the whole bump has probably swollen her nasal passage as well... the bump seems bigger today.

the goo doesn't smell and is not very sticky, but it is clogging her eye.

poor girl!

i am tempted to make a little cut on the side of her face to see if it drains, but i am holding back because that could lead to more problems and possibly infection...

There is a long slotted opening in the roof of her mouth that is a part of the nasal passage. With q-tips you may be able to swab out some of the gunk that is clogging them. You will have to hold her beak as wide open as possible I would NOT cut into the side of her face.

When you apply pressure, the gunk would come out through this slit if it comes out at all.

She most likely has a respiratory infection, and should be on tylan or gallimycin
