Pullets? Amer/marans mixes...

Okay so forgive me, I’ve onlu had chickens for a little over 2 years (love them, but still learning). I have 5 and a half week old chicks I was putting out into a small, enclosed, isolated run for the day to get used to being outside and it helps the others get to know them for when they eventually go out in a few weeks. When I pick them up to put them in to small run, they of course squawk a bit and the roo came running - was he attempting to attack them or me? His wings were out and he was on a mission but my older girls stopped him - they just peck him a bit and keep him away when he gets a little bit of courage. Just curious, was he out to protect the chicks or me?

He hasn’t attacked me yet like the other roos would, he runs to me but doesn’t dance (or challenge I guess) like my other Roos. He gets food from us like the others - but he has those marans talons I don’t want to encounter

I think that's pretty normal behavior just for introducing new chickens to a flock. Mine does that if I introduce a new bird, especially when I first put them out there in the see but don't touch section. It's hard to say, but I think it's a good possibility it was directed toward the chicks. I don't let him do it when I'm around though, if he tries I step toward him until he moves out of my way.
