mine have loved the pumpkins! Nobidy is selling anymore here...apparantly some pig farmer goes and buys all the leftover ones after Halloween from the suppliers around here....but next year I will buy more to decorate with now that I know they will do double duty after halloween!
Mine do not like pumpkins at all. We have tried several types of squash and pumpkin, raw and cooked, but no luck. They do not even like the seeds or guts.
I'm not going to comment on whether or not feeding pumpkin has any effect on worms. I have no idea. We take fecal samples to our cat vet every six months to check for worms, regardless, and treat accordingly.
I can say that chickens LOVE squash...ALL squash, or at least ours love them. We cut buttercup squash in half and they plow through it in a day. When we carved jack-o-lanterns (four big ones) we gave all the seeds and innards to the chickens and they blew through the whole pile in a day and a half. We gave the jack-o-lanterns to them after Halloween and they eat 3/4 of a large pumpkin in a day. They're crazy for them.
Pumpkin seeds, seed oil, and pumpkin pulp have been evaluated in limited clinical trials for medicinal actions, including anthelmintic, hypotensive, and hypoglycemic activity. The extracts may also be useful for managing symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia and anxiety-related disorders, although limited clinical trial information is available.
The first pumpkin my chickens got- they devoured in a about an hour. I put another one the run about 4 days later, and they have hardly touched it. Anyone know why?
Not sure why they would love it 1 day and not the next? weird but chickens can be weird if they want too LOL
