Pungent Odor Coming From Silkies Poo!

it doesnt sound like coryza... if you are only cleaning out once every other day then this is the source of the problem...

should I clean it out everyday? They are on paper towels and over that is pine shavings. As soon as I can move the big ones outside the silkies are going into the 90 quart bin.
I figure they may need a bath too, I'm thinking about dumping out their brooder and filling it with water and maybe some baby shampoo and letting them play in the water for a while and get clean. Then dump out the brooder again, hose it out and let it dry in the sun. I think I will do that now.

Do chicken like baths? lol they need one.

I had chicks in the house once, and I had to clean out the box several times a day to keep it from smelling.
If there is poop collected around the waterer, then you must clean it out more. They are spilling the water and when it mixes with the poop, it is really stinky.
I wouldn't just put water and baby shampoo in the tote box and let them play. You should bathe each one separately.
If you give your babies a bath, you will have to blow dry them or put them somewhere where they will not get chilled. That means turning off your air conditioner, and drying them with a towel, and keep fluffing them as they dry.
If they get chilled, you will have a larger problem.

Yeah I just gave them a bath outside, and it's in the lower 90's, they were mad and stood really still until they were dry. They are still outside, and they look a bit better. Thanks for the advice, I did bathe them one at a time.

I have the same problem!! My sillies smell worse than any other chicks I've had in my house. I have a coop but in ky it just recently was warm enough for them (6 barred rocks)at night. I put them(small silkies and a pullet assortment) in a small lean-to cage in the daytime. So they all can see each other. But the smell is definitely worse and due to the smell we will NOT be getting anymore of this breed.

My silkies are about to be re-homed if this is normal, if not I hope I can help them. I have 4 3 week old silkies and all of a sudden their poo is all brown and smells really bad.

Sorry! But I burst into laughter after reading your note here. I have 2 silky bantam hens, and I said they smell worse than a semi-truck driving over a skunk...an old angry skunk...who owes back taxes...and is affiliated with some mafia business!!! (Still laughing). I think it might have to do with the 5 toes and genetics, because I tried different feeds, etc. My hens are 9 months old by now. Holy-GUACAMOLE!!! Right??? ([email protected])
