Puppy Pads in Brooder Not Going to Work

I use shredded paper. I've a crap load of it available to me from work. I've used hay too. I'm a cheapskate!

I just use the same shavings that my big chickens were using. Don't bother with paper towels or any of that stuff. If the chicks are able to walk they will be fine. Eating a few wood chips likely wont kill them if they are healthy.

Thanks to everyone for all of the responses! I have been using sand and so far it's working out better than the pads. They did appear to eat a lot of it when I first put them in there, but no health issues from it so far. I do have a cardboard soda flat with pine shavings for them to sleep in, they love it.
