Puppy pads

Hello hello! When using puppy pads, do I have to add shavings or can it be solo?

You don’t need shavings, I kept my chicks on puppy pads and only put shavings in one corner by the heat lamp so they could snuggle in under the lamp if they got cold.

Shavings are not needed, but if you decide you could add some on top of the puppy pad

I use shavings on top of the puppy pad after about a week old when they can distinguish feed and treats from shavings. The shavings help keep their feet clean and the brooder from smelling.

I am starting my chicks in a cardboard box lined with puppy pads and some shavings. I am finicky about smells. I have a backup box for when the first one gets stinky. I am glad its ok to use the puppy pads vs newspaper.
