Puppy pics! Help us choose one (video pg 2)

Double merles, who are most often white and come from harl x harl, merle x harl, or merle x merle are very often deaf, and have possible sight problems. In this case since the mom is a mantle these white pups can not be double merles, they are most likely extreme piebalds (similar to white boxers), they can also be deaf, but not as often as the double merles. Although deaf dogs still make awsome pets, and believe it or not there are sometimes even benefits to them being deaf!

Either way if I was buying from this litter I'd want the hearing checked on the all or mostly white pups.

And just as a side note here, those "blues" are actually merles, wouldn't probably matter with a breed that doesn't actually come in blue, but since there are blue danes I felt I should point that out!

Non-issue in this case, the mother is a mantle, and as Havirus pointed out mantle x harlequin won't produce white.

It's not exactly a buyer's market, the waiting lists for good Danes are at least a year. Deposits are made on pups long before they're born. (We avoid puppy mills like the plague.)

I'd like to choose later, too, but have to admit that the truth is there are no bad pups in this litter. Temperament is inherited, and both parents are excellent and from excellent lines. The runt of the litter was stillborn. We don't care that much about color. So it boils down to sex. (I'm resisting the urge to make a bad joke about the other facets of my life here...)

You might want to read Haviris's post once again about deafness. They may not be double merle, but piebalds can also harbor deafness. I'd have them checked unelss you are willing to put the time and effort into raising a deaf dog...I've seen way to many of them end up at the rescues, or, heaven forbid the pound.

It's true that some lightly-marked harlequins are actually double-merles. But suffice it to say that this is not a puppy-mill operation and this is not a merle-to-merle breeding.

If you have potential breedings you're concerned about, you can set your mind at ease for $95:

I'd go for the 1st male - good pigment is always a positive. Oh, and thanks for posting those pics...my puppy-cuteness-meltdown is now reaching epic proportions!!

I like the 2 blues and the spotted/merle one. They're all very cute! Good luck with which ever one you choose!

Actually raising a deaf dog is not much different then raising a hearing dog, and really not any harder, BUT if I was buying I would like to know before hand. I would be all these pups can hear fine, but I'd still think they should be checked just to be sure each buyer is fully informed.

I have never known of a responsible owner whos deaf dog ended up in a rescue or dog pound. Generally good owners will make adjustments were they are needed when they find out one of their pets have special needs.

I've been back to look at the pics, and I still don't know which one I'd pick! I think part of me is evious of your new puppy, but the other part is glad I'm not the one having to choose!
