Purina feed problem******UPDATE Page 4****** Sunday, 07/11

I've been feeding my chickens Purina Layena pellets and have not noticed any problems. Actually I used to buy Agway's brand but then switched to Purina because I had some problems. Agway feeds for some reason would get moldy even though i kept it in a dry place, even found some sharp plastic pieces inside once. I since switched to Purina and have had no problems.

no, really, I still have to buy a couple things there still but am always looking for a good store in my area to replace them.

I wish I had the luck that some people here seems to have had with Purina but my girls hate it and dont do well on it so never again do they get my buisness.

Hmmmmmm.

I just checked my new, unopened bag of Purina Start and Grow. The date is JUN09 DEN1 We live about an hour from that plant.

I assume that it means that it was made on that date. Is there an expiration date or is there a general rule of when the feed is too old? I see your's has 02.

Unfortunately, I was working late and I young family member, who did not know better, fed the birds for me and they also took care of my moms too that day. I did not realize the webs til that night. Prior to that night, the feed seemed to be dusty and did not smell fresh but the date code was not that old, maybe two weeks. A couple of the bags, the feed looled OK until you got half way down too.

Chances are it's not the fault of the mill that produced the feed anyway but rather were picked up somewhere along the line from the warehouse to the distributor to the dealer. I've fed Purina feeds for years and once in a great while I get a bag of their feed with weevils in it. Just the same as I've gotten weevily feed from every other brand of feed I've used extensively. Last weekend I took back a hundred pounds of FRM feed wheat that was so eat up with bugs they'd eaten holes all through the bag itself. The person that loaded it should have noticed it and never let it out of their warehouse.

The feed that has been bad was put in plastic stitched bags, they started this in April. Before that, it was in paper bags and there were no issues with the feed. I believe if they still used paper bags,you would be able to tell by look of the bag. ( If paper bag looks bad, holes, dust, moisture etc. Don't buy).

I am not mad at Purina or trying to get people to not buy Purina. Things happen and we are only human. I informed Purina to help them find out the issues.I just want people who may not be aware of something like this, will take the time to look out for it, so they do not lose any of their birds.​

Here in Statesville NC, we can buy feed from Bartlett Milling, which is located here. I bought a huge bag at Ace Hardware and the hens seem to love it.

I've been feeding Purina quite a bit, big fan of the Flock Raiser. However, due to raising some birds for someone else and having over 60 birds we switched to Dumor grower instead to save a few dollars on feed.
This week, TSC was out of the Dumor grower, so it was either buy Layer for 10-week old chicks or buy Purina again. I got another bag of Flock Raiser and I agree with you guys it seems a lot finer ground and more "dusty" than it used to just a few months back!! Not sure what's up with that!! However the food was very fresh - just milled last month. Earlier in the year I was complaing about buying ancient feed.

But if you want the birds to eat the "dust" just don't refil the feeders till it's all the way gone.

I promise if they get hungry they will keep pecking at it until they get it all - at least mine do.

Manufactored date of June 02?

Is that June of 2002 (very long time for any feed or food to be kept)
And it's a Purina problem, sounds to me like its' an inventory control problem at the store you purchase from.

Is that June 2nd day ( very recent)
That indicates improper handling by Purina or store.


Plastic bags?

My Purina still comes in paper just like it always has.

I feed flockraiser to all my flock and have not had any issues, but my entire flock is totally free range so they may get the extra things they need from there.


Also for those of you that do not know" Dumor feed " is a line of feed put out by purina.
