is purina feed a good feed

wondering this too. Found a dealer who sells the flockraiser. Opinions please? Better than TSC brand or not?

Don't know about "better than TSC" since we don't have TSC here. I use the Purina Starter and also their layer pellets. But now I am experimenting with Nutrena instead. I think any of the major brands are going to have pretty good quality control. And the owner of our ranch store says she has tried all the brands in our area and gets the best results with Purina (and they sell quite a few brands, so she's not just trying to sell me on Purina as a dealer).

The only thing I worry about with the major brands is where they may be getting their raw materials from. With the magnitude of their production I have to imagine that some of the stuff is coming from outside the US. And with the dog food scare a few years ago I don't want to find out that China put melamine in my chicken feed ever.

Purina feeds are vegetarian and more expensive, which is why I rarely use them unless I have some special need. Now, their gamebird feeds have animal protein and I sometimes get those since the co-op's gamebird feeds are all medicated, even for adults. Some say the quality went down when Land o' Lakes bought Purina, but I really don't know about that.

I think any of the big manufacturers you take the risk of where their stuff comes from. I guess that's why it's cheaper than having it milled?? I don't know, since I haven't found anywhere around here that would mill.

On a side notebut still related, that's why I'm excited about finding a McCauley Bro's dealer here because I KNOW they mill that in my home town of Versailles, KY. I'll pay a little more for that feed.

I don't trust any company (especially a large company) that does not list their ingredients list on the package or even their own website. If it is not organic, it is most definitely genetically modified and will contain pesticide residues (just like human food). There are too many feed companies that have poisoned and killed animals due to contamination…Purina is one of them.

I have always feed my chicks purina start and grow and always had good luck with it and I have very healthy chicks everytime , but it is a bit pricey but I think they are worth the cost to me .

I fed Purina for a couple of years & it is a consistant quality product. As to listing ingredients-they do-all manufacturers do-it's required by law. My only concern about the Purina feed was that it didn't contain any animal content. Since chickens are omniverous I wondered about amino acids/
I switched back to Blue Seal bacause of price & I found a dealer who will deliver to me if I buy 1/2 ton at a time.
I have also used Dumor [TSC brand] & it is good as well.
Actually I think any of the major brands do a good job of producing feed that meets the nutritional needs of the intended animals or birds.

I have used Purina, Honor, and Nutrena. I look at the tags on the bag and compare the analysis and the ingredients. The vast majority of the time they are all pretty close. I don't remember off the top of my head what it was but there was a significant difference in protein (I think) percentage between two of the brands on one of the items I bought.

Also, with this past trip to the feedstore I found one of the Gamebird Flight Conditioner bags had some sort of black pellets mixed in with the crumbles. Never had that before and the second bag didn't have it. Obviously something was amiss there.
