Purina Horse Feed

Purina is a brand that for me personally does not work. I had switched my dogs to it and they all got sick. My cat's ended up with urinary problems and when I put my goat on it she had very loose stools and looked awful. So I just stick with what products work for my animals and as a whole, the Purina brand doesn't.

I think their Ultium product is really nice and does wonders, but it's unavailable here so I just stick with Blue Seal or Nutrena.

ihave not heard of any recalls, not recent ones anyways. i have feed purina horse/goat feeds for the entire time i have had horses and goats. neverhad a problem. purina has been the only feed that has gotten my senior mini stallion fat, everything else he lost weight on

i will continue feeding purina unless i get a email, or a link here stating its recalled.

I love Purina and I'm sticking with it LOL! Purina does not work for everyone. Like people, when you ask them what their favorite brand of food, you can tell which one people prefer, generic, middle of the road or high end like Tyson Foods.

Just so you know, Purina (cat and dog food) makers are a separate company from Purina Mills who do livestock feed. They separated like 20 years ago and are completely not affiliated with each other anymore.

I think this is because the products are milled in different parts of the country. For example, I had a terrible time with their stuff when I was in Colorado for a year, often finding mites in the feed. In Florida, their stuff was great quality. Ditto here in Alabama. It all depends on the quality control enforcement in the individual mills, I'm thinking.

I used Purina Horse Feed exclusively for years, several years ago, the consistency of their products began to falter. I had horses have different reactions and the only thing that could have changed was the consistency/quality of the feed. I called their "vets" they absolutely refused to believe that their feed could have been the cause. I had 3 different local vets come to my house, go over everything and all agreed that the feed had to play a part!

I stopped using Purina and to this day I will not use it.

Then, I would consider your comment regarding Purina feeds as being "garbage" nothing more than your opinion. Secondly, regarding the feed store guy's comment as nothing more than his opinion.

The first problem I can remember in concerns to feed was in the 1970s, with a local mill. Since that time I have seen some recalls, and stuff. Think about it human food has been contaminated, it would be impossible to think that animal feeds don't suffer the same problems.

May have an awful lot more to do with the vendor you're dealing with than the factory where it was made. There's a very lengthy and complex supply chain involved.

I actually agree with both Rusty and Welsummer. There is a lot that goes into the mixing and making of feed. Then just as much goes into the care and protection of the end product. The best feed ever can go nasty if left to get wet or ultra hot and humid or just get buggy. My spouse works at one of the larger pet store chains as a manager. They will refuse entire trucks if they find bugs/mildew/rot on one bag. If they find bugs/mildew/rot on a already in store bag they toss the entire isle and wipe the shelves with bleach. Then dh has to dump everything in the Dumpster, tear open the bags and wet it with the hose so people don't pull the manky bags out.
