Purina start and grow

This is very interesting. I use the Purina Start & Grow, and the Purina Flock Raiser. I thought the Start & Grow was medicated, but I just checked the tag and the unopened bag I have doesn't list the amprolium like it used to. The Flock Raiser does have it on the tag still, but no where on the bag itself does it say "Medicated".

To answer the original question, the medication is Amprolium .0125%, which it a coccidiostat. It is used to prevent and build resistance to coccidiosis.

As previously mentioned it is on the white tag hanging from the bottom, I use that exact same feed. I had my layers start at 16 weeks and still had 1/2 a bag (25lbs) left, I called Purina customer service and they stated that I could continue feeding to the layers that the medication would not affect the egg as the medicine would not transfer to the eggs. I have had very hard thick shelled eggs for weeks now. Hope that helps.

I find that Purina is more and more secretive on line...I feed purina feed to cattle also and find it hard to get info from the feed store, they refer me to the "tec rep"... Also I find the tags are usually unreadable from the feed store I get them, who is a purina dealer. They don't want us to know how they are medicating.

I have that same bag in my garage to feed the chicks I am getting that are to be hatched tomorrow.

I hope some of you guys know the purina people cz...I am really thinking about buying products that are honest...like at rural king or tractor supply.

JMO, donna

Edited to add: I medicate rarely...only for new chicks...sometimes a sick calf and never feed medicated feed as a regular....some do. Recently changed feed stores and they seem to promote feeding medicines...Im not organic, but not into medicating either. they push the stuff

I don't use medicated either.
I have always bought the purina sunfresh recipe which is all natural.
My feed stores never push anything on me. They have a large variety of brands and they give me whatever I ask for.

Not huge on medications here either. I vaccinate my pups myself(when I have any), and after that I don't do any with the exception of rabies from the vet. Even that I try to put off and avoid if possible. Shhhhh - don't tell.

As for my chickens, I have used one bag of medicated feed when they first arrived. After that, I reason they are in a small flock on clean ground, low stress environment, and protected as much as possible. Need for medicated feed seems low, IMO. So I am currently buying the Purina Layena natural whatever. However, if there is a better feed that is More natural and better for the chickens, I would love suggestions. Not that my chickens haven't done well on this feed - but I am not 100% supportive of Purina.

I use Purina Start and grow medicated too. It's only a preventative and they can still get cocci. I've only had it happen once when I bought my first 7 week old chicks though, all my others have been fine.

You can medicate them for Cocci as well as feed them their food, and they will be fine

What is cocci?

Also, why do you have to feed chicks a special feed? What do similar baby birds eat in the wild? Can they be raised without buying food from the big, bad corporations? Is cracked corn too hard for them to digest?

Thanks,

New Guy

Well, I started this and hope now to stop it.
It was my stupidity. There is a tag attached to the sewn in portion of the bag that does say amprolium. My little chicks seem fine today on day 3 of sulmet. I am decreasing the amt as advised.
I learned by looking at other post that I should not give them the yogurt with it due to a protein interfering with the sulmet. But not before they had their first lid full. OH..... Those little critters ate it up before I could get back to remove it.LOL They are so funny.
I can now put my hand in to remove something and they come running. Mama what have you got they seem to say. If I sing to them they will settle down and sleep just like a baby. They now also will eat from my hand some crumbles. It seems they like it better from my hand.
These are my first and I still am on pens and needles but having lots of laughs and fun. Jean
