So this little guy pipped yesterday sometime before 8am...He pipped I’m wrong section of shell so I k is he is malpositioned...I pulled him out to start breaking the shell away from his pip and the membrane looks purple. I can see him in there and it is not shrink wrapped around him. Should I keep chipping away?

I would not. I am wondering if the purple color is blood under the membrane. Do you hear it making any noise? is it moving?

In this picture I found his beak. Looking at the pic it is to the right of his pip whole. I could hear him tapping there but he hasn’t been able to crack anything besides his initial pip... which was at the very least 34 hours ago and possibly even 42 hours ago.

Yes, he’s been chirping pretty much since 9am yesterday. Loud and pretty constant. He’s tapping the egg to the right of his pip hole. I removed some shell where he was tapping and can see his little eye and beak. It almost looks like it’s bruised where his initial pip hole is. Like he picked a bad spot to pip through?

So I just picked off just a tiny bit more to the right of his face and that chunk that came off under the membrane was solid white. I put some polysporin on the membrane and put him back in the incubator. I also had the shower going. Room was 80 degrees and 78% when I was messing with his shell.

I stopped. I was just trying to get where he was tapping. He’s been working on the same spot all afternoon but is not breaking through. Anyway he’s back in the incubator till I can figure out our next steps.

What kind of egg is this Charwolf? It is a beautiful color.

What day is this egg at incubation wise?
You said it has been 36 to 40 hours from the initial external pip? That purple area concerns me. I think it looks like blood. But if you say it is tapping in the opposite direction and that membrane is dry and white. You can try to gently just remove break the shell a little at a time and slowly peel the membrane in that are if it looks dry. Hopefully, you will free him enough he can push the rest of the way out. Or Maybe it was / is in a bad position? And will not be able to make any more progress without help. I just really don't know. Maybe go with your gut!

I set them on March 21st at 11:00am. They are very dark black copper Marans eggs that were shipped to me. I have not been able to see anything inside any of the 6 eggs...nothing is happening at all with the other 5. Today at 11:00 am they completed 21 days of incubation. He is malpositioned so his external pip was actually his internal pip but not in the air sac. I’m not sure what time he exactly pipped... so it’s been somewhere between 35-43 hours since the pip (would be considered internal pip)
I’m just super nervous. This was a project to do with my daughter during our quarantine. We’ve been looking forward to them for 3 weeks. The other 5 I’m sure are goners. No pips, peeping, rocking nothing. This little guy is our only hope and he’s a malpositioned. I just don’t want to lose him.

@CluckNDoodle You're so good with assisted hatching. Maybe you'll offer some advise?

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I had a crazy day today.

The purple is probably from where the chick pipped through a blood vessel during it's initial pip. That happens sometimes even when they aren't malpositioned but it appears this chick is also malpositioned.

You can apply coconut oil or antibiotic ointment without pain reliever to the membrane making it translucent enough to see if there are still blood vessels being absorbed. The level of activity you described does sound like it may be stuck.

I'm going to bed so I won't be able to respond quickly tonight but if you don't see any blood vessels after making the membrane translucent you can continue to gently pull away at the shell and keep checking to make sure it's ok to proceed with assisting the chick out of the shell. If you see any blood apply gentle pressure with a q-tip or paper towel (I find q-tips very helpful during assists for applying the ointment and applying pressure) and put the chick back in the incubator to finish absorbing. If there's no blood you can proceed to take the top off of the shell and I like to allow the chick to do the final push our on it's own. Good luck with your little one!
