I can't find the article on the chicken vocalizations. I'm sure it's in the copy of Backyard Poultry I gave away.
I can re-order it online though and then I'll scan it.

it would be cool to read that article.
My laying RIR and my Buttercup Roo makes this sound that we both call growling and we were wondering what it was. They only do it when I go out to feed them and look for eggs, mostly in the morning. In the evening when I check for eggs, they don't do it as much, or at all. I figured they were just annoyed with me.
