This is the third rooster I've lost in the last year. They all start by getting wobbly and slowly they get unbalanced and drift downward until one day I walk in and there they lay on their side slowly kicking or moving their legs. They always keep eating as normal and otherwise seem fine just that they get wobbly. I don't know if it's the pineshavings that they may pick up from picking. I'm not using cedar. They are eating layer, alittle corn, and bread as a treat once in awhile. I checked his vent and there is a little bit of white scaly around the bottom side. They don't lose weight. I just don't get it. I just don't want to lose anymore. There are other chickens in with them and it's only ever one at a time about three months apart. How do I check if it's worms ? Or could it be mites? If it was one of these wouldn't I lose more of them more readily? The hens are all laying and doing just fine. He was in his second year so he's not that old. Mike

I don't have a rooster, but have heard people on here talk about how feeding roosters laying feed is hard on them, especially the extra calcium. Check out this thread and read both posts #1 and #4, her EE hen had similar symptoms and her extension office thought it was caused by visceral gout which can be caused by excess calcium.

Sorry for the loss of your three roosters.

Well I figured it out did a autopsy and his crop and his gizzard are full of pine shavings. I checked my bag of shavings and it says premium pine shavings on the bag. I don't get it. Maybe I am using to much but don't want wetness to get real bad. Bad thing is it's one of my better blrw roosters. Mike
