I am new to all of this, but your coop is looking awesome!
Are you staying with the "dirt" run or are you thinking of using sand? Have heard/seen alot of others using that medium and having very good results..easy clean-up. Anything thing that makes my life easier is good-to-go..
Have you givin any thought to what you are planting around your coop? I really like that idea of a "bed" around the perimeter..maybe have to borrow that one! Cute girls too!!
Thanks! Around the run is the hardware cloth apron to keep predators from digging under. I put the garden stones along the edge to hold the hardware cloth down and then I will fill the garden area with decoratve stones. I thought about adding sand to the run but think that for now I will just leave the dirt and see how it goes. I may eventually add sand to al my runs. And thanks they are super cute and tiny. Japanese Bantams. But sadly out of the 4 I only got 1 girl. But the boys are good so far. I will be rehoming 2 in a few short months.
well, there you go..shows how much I know, can't tell the boys from the girl..
..ha ha the decorative stones around the perimeter "garden area" will be very low maintenance...nice. Wondering, if a one would want to fill the "garden area" with good-dirt and plant something in there, could you still do that even with the fencing at the bottom...maybe put landscape fabric over the fencing, then the dirt..don't know..just thinking out loud.
Hi--I am currently ading on to my coop, and I was wondering if you removed the original wall from the old coop that sort of divides it from the new part of the coop? I am unsure if I should leave my coop in two "rooms" or if I should remove the old wall.
So I have a small coop that I was using for my 2BBWs over the summer. They were recently processed and since the small coop was vacant I couldnt help myself but get more chicks. So I decided to put an addition on it and make a small chicken coop. The first pics are of before ANd here is the progress from yesterdays build edited to make the pics larger

Yes I did leave the original wall up. I did it because we wanted to make sure the roof was supported and it was already there so we decided not to fuss with it. I was recently thinking about the wall and having the "2 rooms" and Im concerned that when they are of laying age they will find it more dark and private to lay eggs around the corner of that wall which I I dont have outside access to. So I like it because it looks ok but nervous they wont use the nest boxes but I plan to close in the nest box openings a little to make it a smaller more private opening. Other than that the wall doesnt bother me much. Do you have pics or a thread you started about your addition? id love to see it.
Quote: No, I don't have pics. My coop is a small little kit coop with a small attached run. I raised the whole thing 10" and I'm enclosing part of the upper run so the coop will be more than twice the original size, but the run will essentially be the same size. I added a door to the end so I can get to the whole inside of the coop for cleaning, I hadn't thought about the egg issue. Hopefully they'll use the nest boxes.
This isn't my coop, but the shape is the same as the original one:
The end of the run is now a big door, shown on the left in this pic. The entire structure is 10" higher. The coop floor extends all the way across to the left end, and the entire area above the floor is walled in instead of hardware cloth. The ladder from the run will enter through the floor somehow, I haven't quite figured out where. I have a second ladder outside the door shown in the front right, that is the one they always use when I let them out. The nest boxes are on the right end. The entire thing is on 4 wheels and it has handles on one end to push it around. I'm happy with it, I should have gotten a bigger coop to begin with! I thought I just wanted three hens I've spent a bunch of money and time modifying this coop. live and learn.

I guess I do have this picture on my phone: This is just with the height addition and wheels added on. The door isn't on the left end yet and the floor isn't installed yet. There is a wall on the left side of the coop, inside the run, I wasn't sure if I was going to remove that or leave it. I could make the original door bigger without affecting the structure, I think.
Hey Chickin Pickin,
Any chance we can see a picture of where the run and the coop roofs meet...I'm in the start up of attaching a run to my coop with what looks like the same basic setup as yours...thanks....happy holidays
