Putting down a sick chicken

I think we're going to kill off the chicken. I've been caring for her for a week, and she seems more miserable than ever. She is lying down, sprawled out, eyes closed, but still heaving with heavy breaths. I hoped she would die naturally, but she perked up for awhile, and now she's back to looking near death. it's back and forth. seems miserable for her.

i haven't gotten many responses, so i'm praying someone sees this to help out ASAP.
In my last post, I told her about her conditon... I believe it's severe, severe "Salpingitis." She is badly swollen up in her belly.
i've tried natural remedies and it hasn't helped.

So what is the most humane way to finish her off? we can't afford to have her euthanized.

We'd like to find a quick way to do it, so she doesn't suffer any more.

I have had to shoot one of mine, made me feel aweful. I read in a post where someone put theirs in a box and hooked it to the car exaust pipe some how and it just put it to sleep in about 30 sec that seems more humane to me. So sorry your having to go through this.

i agree would just fall asleep a lot kinder , so sorry to hear about her

When we have to do this we chop the head off. We put a little sock over her head, try to relax her, then lay her down and chop with an ax. She doesn't know what's coming, and it's instantaneous. Good luck - I know it's horrible to have to do it, but once you find out that you can in fact do it, the next time one get's severely ill, you will know that you can swiftly end her suffering before it drags on.

I recently had to put down 12 chicks that I paid 60 dollars for. It was really hard, but I knew they wouldn't be suffering anymore.

We decapitate here. I believe it's the kindest way. As stated before, it's quick and instantaneous. It sounds like putting her down would be the kindest thing.

I had to put one of mine down today(very hard to do)because of a dislocated hip. I used a .22 cal rifle to the back of the head,was terrible but quick and no suffering.

I never have done it just read about it in one of the post somewhere. I can see where it could be dangerous. I have had to use a gun though , I dont think I could handle the cutiing stuff, then again I'm a girl :/ and vegitarian as well.

All it takes is a cutting block/tree stump and a hatchet/tomahawk. I, literally, just came inside from putting one of my six chicks down. She was in a lot of pain and it was the merciful thing to do.

Decapitation may seem gruesome, but there is no pain for them. If you want to put them down, in a humane manner, it's the best route to take. Initially, you will see them react to the chop, so it may look like it was painful for them, but any pain that they may have felt is gone in the very same instant. Their body will move around, afterwards, but just remember that it is the nervous system going haywire. They are not actually alive to feel anything.

I'm sorry if my description bothered anyone, but I just had to do it, and I figured that anyone who hasn't would want to know what to expect if they chose to decapitate.
