Putting eggs in the bator on July 25, does anyone wanna hatch along???

It does drive me crazy. I have only candled once at 6 days and I am trying to let nature do its thing HOWEVER I want to look so bad. It is easier to leave well enough alone when the broody is so ******!

I only started chicken keeping in April when I got some production reds from TSC. *WARNING CHICKEN MATH AHEAD*

------Then I got my broody in June from a guy who wanted to sell her due to her being broody all the time. She was in this little cage with a rooster where she couldn't walk around. It was so pitiful. I brought her home to the good life of free ranging and mealworms! She went broody and I went and got some eggs a couple of days later so we will see if she is a good mama. So far she is perfect! On another note, I am waiting on my first eggs from my production reds that I got in April.

I look in the nest boxes 15 times a day, so I guess that keeps me from wanting to candle as much.
Yes, I guess a****** mama would make it easier not to candle. LOL!!!!!!!!!!

I think I need one of those to keep me from candling.
Oh, that is so sad that she was in a cage she couldn't stand up in.

Glad she is with you now. What kind of bird is she? I went to a brooders house once that had lots of birds in cages like that where they couldn't walk around. It is so sad, I don't understand how people can be that way.

Ok been busy working but wanted to check in. I set my eggs on the 24th and candled on the 4th I am happy to report 18 out of the 24 are very active not sure about number 19 left it in and will check it in the morning. So ready for lock down. We got two new Buff rooster 5 months old monster big. Sweet birds, will post pictures soon of our flock.
Lockdown yea!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I learned my lesson today. My broody came off of the nest and I quickly grabbed the eggs to candle them. They all looked good but as I was taking the 6th egg off of the candler, I dropped and busted it.

I won't be candling them anymore and I'll just let my broody take care of them. She obviously takes better care of them than me.

So sorry.

Oh man, that's awkward! Mine are due the 18th too, Chickn Tamer -- I'd come chick-sit if I could. Good luck with your silkie!!!! Got any pictures??? (Ya know, so we can reassure you you're gonna do great!)

My chickens tried to eat all of my tomatoes this year. I had to fence my garden and it works fine but they still try to get in.

LOL! Glad it's not just mine. Did the tomatoes make it? My peppers finally came back but it took a long time for them to recover. Wih I'd thought of fencing the garden sooner, but at first they did a wonderful job of leaving the plants alone and just eating the bugs. Wish I could trust them to do that now -- I've got an awful squash bug infestation I've been battling for weeks. Finally starting to get on top of it, I think/hope/pray!

Shoot, thejohnsie, I should've gone that route for a broody. Instead I ordered two australorps and a speckled sussex, hoping one of them (at least) will prove to be a broody. With my luck, all three will -- simultaneously

Either that or none at all, which will mean I need to get more... Ah, chicken math!
