WARNING: VERY LONG AND ABOUT PIPPING THE WRONG END AND EMERGENCY SITUATIONS. I THOUGHT I WOULD LET YOU KNOW UP FRONT IN CASE YOU DON'T WANT TO READ.Whee on the Wheaten Maran! And yeah, the pipping thing -- I've been looking for info about helping eggs hatch, when to, when not to -- I didn't even know they could pip the wrong end! So I'm suddenly feeling horribly unprepared...

It is really not hard helping them when they have this problem. It more a matter of help or not to help. As far as I am concerned if they have pipped the wrong end but, I can see the beak clearly then I leave well enough alone because, that means they can breath. Sometimes they will go on and hatch and I think other time they get stuck. As long as they can breath though they can just sit in there little eggs and wait till everyone else gets out then I will help them.
This is when I have a problem. When I look in and they have pipped the wrong end but, can not see a beak. If they don't have air they could be dying and I am sure it doesn't take all that long to run out of air. Like my Maran yesterday I think I barely got to it in time. Once I got him opened he had quit peeping and was breathing really heavy but, after 10 minutes he was peeping again. If they pipped but I couldn't see a beak I would probably automatically put a hole big enough for them to breath but, my problem is if there are others hatching. I mean I am always worried my loss will be bigger if I open the bator. At the same time it is hard to watch knowing the one can't breath. So my solution was to get the egg out as quick as possible with keeping the lid close to shut as possible.
I think where assisting hatch goes wrong is people get to crazy and try to break away all the shell at once. I think the important part is to remember they still have veins in the membrane with blood and the yolk sac might not be absorbed. So I think you should only treat the immediate crisis which is making sure they can breath and then let them wait so veins can recede and the yolk sac can be absorb. I figure if all their siblings have made it out of their eggs then it should be safe for them to come out and play too.
