Putting smily icons on replies

I feel like such a dolt! I can get a smily on a new post but if I reply to a post and try to add a smiley, I only get the words that describe the icon...What do I do to get the picture?

I think you have to change your settings, maybe under profile?

You will only get the words as you are writing your reply. The smiley should show up after you submit. Hint: Often a space must be inserted before or after the smiley for it to show up. Does that solve the problem?
