PVC Introduction Pen

Nice little isolation coop!

Thank you!

Today, I added a milk crate nest box to it, as well as a waterer for them off the same cooler bucket, and a PVC roost.

I'm wondering if I should make an "article" on BYC about this waterer. I had a hard time finding examples on the interwebs when I considered changing from the bucket to the cooler.

We went and picked up this hose barb three-way.

Husband cut some tubing to come down from the spigot on the cooler, then the two different waterers are fed from the side pieces of barb.

This is the hose barb that goes into the PVC. We had to get a specific fitting to go at the end of the PVC. I think it was a slip/threaded coupling.

Because of the waterers we got, it was easy to just cut the pvc and insert. I chose 11 inches for the pvc between the cups. Then we just used a two inch piece of PVC at the end to connect to the drinker cup, and capped it off.

Installed. They had no problem figuring things out.

And yep, leave it to me to not notice the algae forming in the other tube until reviewing the photos. Not sure how I'm going to clean that, but it's now on the to-do list.

I really cannot begin to express how HAPPY those waterers make me. Seriously. Best. Things. Ever. :)

Dur! Forgot about the roost lol

We got a 10ft piece of 1" PVC and cut it at 5ft to span across the majority of the pen. For the feet, it's a 12" piece on either side of the T. It's also raised just 12" off the ground, so they still have some head room in the coop when they're on it. That means I had to find another piece of leftover PVC to finish out the feet.

Makeshift nest box. That's a roofing shingle over the top of it. I'll honestly be surprised if they use it. It's primitive lol. I'm also wondering if I should move it next to the feeder. I'll play that by ear.

That's all for now!

That's a threaded/hose barb fitting....slip fittings are for gluing pvc to pvc and don't have barbs.

Yes, you can make an 'article'...go to Learning Center>Member Pages> Add a Member Page.

If they're old enough to lay and you put a fake egg in the milk crate they will probably lay there.
1" PVC is pretty small for a roost....and if they all get get on there it any bow way out...lol!

I don't have a really cohesive way of explaining things :)

We got a 1/2" coupling that was slip on one end and threaded on the other end. Then we took the 1/2" hose barb fitting and screwed it into the coupling so we could feed water into the PVC. Does that make better sense?

And yeah, I was worried about just using 1" PVC for their temp roost. It is a little bendy, but seems to be holding well. I'd recommend others go up to 2" maybe, if they want something sturdier. We stayed with the 1" since we still had some elbows and Ts. Also, we put the fake egg in this evening, so we'll see what happens tomorrow. A few of the girls didn't take long to check it out :)
