when we made the first one, my boyfriend decided that it would be "best" of we cut the pipe that they eat out of in half (almost, more like 2/3s) and then slide it into the fittings. Well, much to his surprise (not mine, i didnt wanna do it that way) it didnt fit into the fittings after that

produces So that was a wast of pipe. I have to go get more pipes and other stuff now, because after I showed him how to do it, it worked perfectly. I still need to sand the edges down, but I think for now its fine.
I also like the way you tilted yours a little at an angle (the feeding part)....I'll do that on my next one, easier access.

Just from my recent experience, I would go ahead and use 4". I just think 3" is too narrow in the fittings and will block up. Best to spend a couple bucks more for the wider pipe and be safe. Just by all the photos I've seen, it looks like 4" doesn't clog at all.

I guess I was trying to make the most out of cheap recycled pipe (3" I got). I'll have to go for the 4" instead now.

i would go 90 degrees, thats what i did and it works fine, but shoot, you can try it out and let us know how it works. But, when i did the math in my head it seemed to work out just the same as a 90 degree one lol....seems like you'd have 2 pieces which means more work thats a waste of time. Also if you want it to hold less feed, still go with the 4 inch as it could clog easier otherwise, but instead just dont make the pieces as long as we did.

Sounds like to me that folks have multiple setups that work great. Pick one and run with it but make sure you let us know how well it worked

Just like everything in life, there are multiple ways of getting the job done well.

Your feeder is NOT insignificant! It is exactly what you need, which means it's great! Sheesh!! I like the hole set up very much, and was thinking that making a little one out of small diameter pipe for peeps would be a fun project!

I was also thinking that if someone had a lot of birds, and wanted to make a freestanding one they could take 3 or four and strap them together so they branched off in say three different directions like the legs of a pedestal table. *shrugs* but for you, THIS was a very elegant solution, BIGGER would not be BETTER.

The trick is each situation is different.

I think the holes are a great idea. It seems no matter what type of feeder I use, there is always so much waste.

I use the pipe feeders for grit and shell, but I admit the 90 degree is not the way to go. I'm going to change to a 60 degree like you all suggest. Thank would work much better!

I agree- innovation is the heart and soul of farming! How you construct your dispensers depends on available materials, cost, number of birds, coop layout...make it to suit yourself and modify as you learn more about your needs...
