PVC pipe run

We just built a 4' X 8' hoop enclosure for growing out young birds on grass. We made the base out of 2X4s, so it is too heavy for a raccoon to tip up (unlike my chick brooders, which I found out the hard way when a family of raccoons wiped out many of my young Marans

), but it's still easy enough for one person to move around. We used PVC to support the wire over the top, hoop style. The wire we used is a fairly heavy 1/2" X 1" welded wire.

It's too dark to get a pic now, but I'll try to upload one tomorrow. I really like this pen.

PVC electrical conduit (the gray stuff) is UV resistant and will work with the white fittings. Look for it in with the electrical stuff at your home improvement store. I've also found that it is much more flexible and will bend a LOT. I used to make temporary half hoop green houses out of it and try to get an early start on my garden.

At one of the outdoor arenas where we ride, there is 6" PVC pipe along the entire top edge of the perimeter chainlink (very comfy for spectators to lean on while watching!). It was just split down the center and pushed onto the fence, then wired every now and then. It has been there for years and horses quite often bump into it, sometimes really hard, and it isn't brittle at all. Kids climb on it, some people mount their horses from it, it's just really held up well. So maybe there are different grades of PVC pipe?
I sure like the looks of that run made with PVC, very tidy looking and clean, finished edges. I might try something like that!

I've been looking for this!! Thanks for posting the name of the UV resistant stuff. Any idea how long it will hold up?

I think it makes a great "tractor" and wouldn't mind one. Seems to me that expecting any run to keep out predators is foolish. I lock my chickens in at night and have hardware cloth and screening on the windows. I'd be to nervous to leave chickens roosting in a run or the pop hole door open even with a wire cover.

Hi there,
I was thinking of building a run like yours. A question came up about how to protect from predators digging under the run and getting to the chickens. Did you do anything with your design to cover that potential problem? Thanks for any reply!
