im expanding my coop and need to add more ventilation. wondering if pipe with an elbow could go into the ceiling? having trouble finding an example of this. maybe root cellar style? what do you think

I think a pvc pipe with a t may work. All of my vents are on the side of the building not on the roof!

Hope this helped!

All four walls and the roof are fair game for venting, just no drafts and no moisture coming into the coop. Those turbine vents might be of interest to you… pvc pipe that is smaller than six inches will not be worth the effort however. I understand root cellar venting, but the requirements of chickens is different. How many birds and into what size coop? That information coupled with your intentions would or could get a better answer/input to your needs.

Best to you and your birds,

RJ

Good points^^^

Maybe a single wall stove pipe (metal) with a "T" on top, or a cap ... make sure to cover exit with heavy duty hardware cloth!

Or you could just build a cupola ... or install a "ridge vent"?

I really like the cupola idea… I have to build one of those for myself one day. I am adding this to my official bucket list! I think they look cool and they can work very well, many of the old time barns in my area had one or more, and if your farm had money… you got fancy lighting rods to sit atop of them and sometimes a weather vane. The old guys knew their stuff. they did a lot more with a lot less, so my hat is off to them.

thanks for the input guys! had to be away from my computer for a while but heres whats happened- I decided to add a second level to reduce foot print. its my "pet" backyard flock (ie- we wont eat these guys) so size mattered. went up to 32 sq ft for 10 birds, just hoping everyone stays put and I don't end up with 10 birds upstairs. because the down stairs has a flat ceiling ive just added hatches and drilled hole and am hoping its enough! still thinking some ceiling vents and I love the cupola idea.

Every once in a while in our area you see an old one at a yard sale or flea market, way too big for a modest coop but awesome!

This doesn't quite make sense to me.

Is this coop already built?
Can you post pics?

32 sqft is pretty tight for 10 birds...and they will probably want to all be as high as possible.

I already had the top level built, I raised it and added the bottom. each level is 3 ft tall. I agree that its a little snug for ten birds but each morning they are let out into their 1500sq ft yard. I designed the bottom door to slide shut and can be closed all the way or left open 2 or 3 inches at night. a silky and some younger birds stay in the bottom. (hoping they will always see this as "home"). it was funny watching my big girls figure out the taller ladder but they quickly became pros.

So ... Is there a way from first floor to second floor, other than exiting building?

Spiral stair case? ;)

Is it basically 4'X8' on each floor?
