I’m so sorry. Yes, they are definitely in peril. We had a coyote prey on all my fine feathered friends last year. It was horrible. We rarely have coyotes up by the house and barn. We live in big open high plains and they don’t come around much.
We tried live traps but no success. Luckily one of my neighbors uses a call to hunt. (I hope this doesn’t offend anyone) He’s planning on coming over soon before we start lambing. We have two big guard dogs with the sheep but it probably won’t be enough since last years new coyote neighbors moved in.
How tame is your male? I don’t really have experience with bobcats but I imagine they would kill up to a 6 mo.old emu chick.

I think they are beautiful and I wouldn’t let my friend hunt one but then I would be so torn about the whole thing. My general rule of thumb is that if anything trespasses into our space here then they are toast. Outside of our space I totally love and respect all of them, even coyotes. But after last summer my feelings for the coyotes is a bit tainted.

I should look that up too

They aren’t really in captivity. More like free range within large hay meadows and access to corrals and barn all winter.

Well, by 'captivity' I meant 'not wild'...
...maybe 'domesticated' would be a better word.

Yep. Domesticated. I think most any emus would brood as pets, as long as they are happy and healthy. This all came about with my 3 Emus in a very large area. Edwina is at least 10 (her age when she was given to me) the boys I bought 3 yrs ago when they were 2 months old.
It seems to be a very strong hormonal driven instinct.? This is the first time in 10 years Edwina has laid eggs.
I am thinking that one reason the males are broody is because the female use so much energy laying the eggs. The shell is so massive. The reason I think this is because I had to hold Edwina to load her into a traile a couple of days ago and I was shocked by her thinness.
They have free choice to their food and water at all times. I may have to look into a better feed more specific to Emus. I’m hoping to be able to find a mill here in Montana that, I think, custom mixes feed for a emu ranch up north.

it's aboriginal plural, or you can use the King James version "yea emus "
