Pyxis' Emu Chat Thread

The babies had their first food this morning, little pieces of collard greens :) They're pecking at their pellets but haven't shown interest in actually eating them yet. In another day or so though I suspect they'll be hungry and eating.

Maybe you need to make airplane noises to pop the food into their mouths...that always worked for my boys when they were little

What day after hatch do they generally start eating and drinking?
Chicken chicks start at a day or two....quail less....is it determined by the size of the yolk?

I'm not sure if it's to do with yolk size, but they take quite a while to get their legs under them and really get mobile, so in the wild they'd need to be able to live off the yolk for several days until they could actually leave the nest.

I think last year it took Desi and Ciara something like four or five days to start eating.

It can be hard to get a cat to take a pill!

Pills are one thing, lol; this stuff is a liquid. She gets a pill over her food every morning and evening for her thyroid disease and that's no trouble. The liquid just must have a really bad taste or smell because it puts her right off.

Can the vet give you a pill version?
