Pyxis' Emu Chat Thread

i know i've asked this before but i can't find the reply posts. how does everybody treat their emus for " triple E". where do you buy your vaccine, type of needles i need, shot placement...the works
never done mine, not much "EEE" here on the cape but it's been such a wet year i worried were gonna get swamped with mosquitoes.

I buy the vaccines from Jeffers. I get the one that does WEE, EEE, and west nile. You just have to make sure it doesn't also include the equine flu. They get the same dose as a horse. The shot goes into the muscle of the thigh.

Coriander: "Hey new big stilt-chickens, I'm in charge here!"

Emus: "Okay tiny jumpy-bird, you can be in charge."

Coriander: "Okay, so long as we have that clear."

The emus got moved to my workshop today so they have more space. Coriander lives in there and she's top hen. The fact that the newcomers are already four times her size doesn't deter her from maintaining that status.
they look great!

went to jeffers, couldn't find it, it was confusing, to many wmv, eee, and other letters. so what i'm asking...please hold my hand, like i'm a child...could you show me exactly which i need to order. I mean when you get a chance, could you pop over to their website and get the item # on the vaccine you order. thank you for helping, feel free to mock my inability to order stuff online

You're fine, it took me manually going through them all to find the one I wanted the first time I did it, lol.

So this one is EEE and WEE plus west nile. Tetanus toxoid is in there too but that's fine and you're gonna have a real hard time ever finding one that doesn't include it. This is the one I use on my older bird, since it protects from West Nile as well. You could probably use it for chicks too, I've just only found info about doing EEE and WEE in chicks so I was cautious to do West Nile as well when they are still young.

And this one is EEE and WEE only (tetanus toxoid too again), I do the chicks with this one at 6 weeks and 12 weeks. Then at six months I do the one with West Nile, and after that they get yearly boosters.

Not a great picture, but here they were this evening:

And this is just something I wanted to show you guys. Ciara is getting new feathers. Looks like they don't really molt feathers out and then regrow them like chickens. Instead, she's growing new ones all underneath and they are starting to peek out. If you move the old feathers to the side, you can see them:
