Pyxis' Emu Chat Thread

Hello Cyber Bird Friends. I Hope this post finds everone well, inspite of this crazy year. It's that time of year again..... Emu egg laying season. The rest of the year i dont mind being a solo emu owner, but as soon as the first egg hits the hay, I start obsessing about emus, emu mating, egg hatching and all things emu. Rather than annoy my "normal" friends, i come here to BYC for my bird chat.
so what's been going on? anybodies birds laying? anyone already got eggs in the box?
did i miss any cool stories? havent had a chance to read over the other emu posts yet. anything i should check out?
Things here on Cape Cod have been pretty quite, i been dealing with some predator problems and covid-19 messed up egg sales at the farmers markets so i'm feeling the pinch of paying for feed outta pocket, also there is hay/straw stortage which made finding winter bedding for the emus a hassle.
Taylor my female laid her first eggs on the 16 of Dec, which is a eariler. Last year it was the 24th of Dec and the year before the 22th of Jan. (her first year) so that was intresting. Not sure what trigger the egg laying, but both last year and this year we had a big storm coming so i put in the winter bedding, it's just bare sand in their shelter the rest of the year, and a week later, she laid. your thoughts?? (perfect example of why i come back to BYC, my non-emu friends have no imput on these questions)
althought she laid her first egg of the season, haven't seen any mating behavior and my male (Elvis) is totallly chill. no aggressive behavior at all. As usual for this time of year they have both stopped eating.
anyway, hope you guys arn't annoyed by my seasonal appearence. -Matt
