Quail - Are they easy to care for?

Quote:
If you put nest boxes up high, they probably wouldn't use them. Mine don't have nest boxes per se, but they each have a dusting pan in their cages. More times than not the birds lay their eggs in the dusting pans. So I would say that they certainly will use nest boxes. But they are ground dwellers, so you'd probably need to keep their nests on the floor of the cage. Plus they'll probably sleep in the nests.

Buttons make very good pet birds. By pet I mean something along the lines of a finch...pretty to look at and listen to, but not to hold and love on. Buttons are a bit more spazzy than other types of quail. But they are just as easy to raise as coturnix, they just aren't cold-hardy. You can keep a pair or trio of buttons in a 20 gallon long fish tank. Their calls are so sweet! I love mine, if I had to get rid of all my birds except one, it would be a tough choice between my buttons and my geese

my mom kept Buttons in the bottom of her finch cages, to clean up the dropped food. I loved the egg supply!

(no one else would eat them, and she wasn't raising chicks-little sis thought is was 'gross!' but now that she's a grown up 'gourmet' city girl she doesn't)
