first of all i have 13 coturnix quail. they started laying about 4 wks ago. we separated all the males but two out of the breeding pen. before that we were getting 6 eggs a day and for about a wk after we were getting 6 eggs. we also banded all of the males. after about 2 wks, another one started crowing that was not banded. then we started getting only 5 eggs. is it possible that one of the hens switched sexes? there were 6 hens and 2 males in the breeding pen after we separated the extra males out.

Did any of them travel to a clinic in Sweden?

Seriously, I think the more likely answer is that they are probably hard to sex and you just got one wrong. It happens to the best of them, no doubt.

Hi Melissa this is probably late but I dont believe your mistaken. I believe its possible. I had a batch of quails and I was choosing which male to use for my tuxedo hens. I chose a male that crowed and he was most active sexually. I placed him with my hens and one of the hens that wasnt laying eggs right did better job with him there. Today I saw him looking like he was in pain and in a blink of an eye I saw him drop a huge quail egg. Way bigger than any other hen in my batch have layed.. I couldnt believe it. If I wasnt there to see it with my own eyes I would not have believed it. So to the contrary of what people may say. It's possible very rare but possible. I've never seen this happen in my life until today. I would post a photo of the huge egg cause its way bigger than any other egg I have.
