Quail chick can’t stand or walk. Help!

Hi! Today 6 quails hatched. One of them could not walk or stand. The rear end of the chick is on the floor while the legs are straight forward. It’s almost like it’s leaning on his butt. Here is a picture

Do any of you know what this is and how to treat it? Thanks very much!

How long has it been out of the shell? I would give it 12 hours or so before trying to treat it.

If it doesn't get better by tomorrow, you can try putting it in a cup that is small enough to force it to stand upright for a couple hours to see if that helps. You could also try putting tape around its legs in a kind of hobble to force its legs into the correct position.

These treatments may help, but if they don't, you may need to cull it.

So far it has been about 5 hours. I am gonna try these if it doesn’t get better. I’m hoping I don’t have to cull this baby because it’s my only yellow chick. Thanks for the suggestions!

I just noticed that his back was hunched too. I’m just gonna wait till tommorow and see what happens. Hopefully it’s good news...

Depending on how much time your willing to devote, I would suggest holding the chick in the correct position for about a day.

I had a quail chick (she was about 3 weeks old) with a different issue. She had crossed legs, so I tried many different braces to fix them. She escaped all of them, so I ended up fixing her legs by holding her in my hand in the correct position for about a day. Her legs were fine after that.

I don't know if it would work for your chick, but you could give it a try.

It looks like the chick has found a way to walk around awkwardly. I just noticed that the foot is a little crooked inwards.

I just found another chick that also can’t walk at allwhenever it tries to walk, his legs fling backwards and he flips around. His legs are also a little bit splayed. Do you think she/he is gonna make it?

you can make booties from blue masking tape to try and correct or you can just let nature take its course. I have a few adults in my aviary that have some degree of curled toes etc that have survived just fine......it kinda depends on your overall goal

most of the time these chicks are “failure to thrive” and ultimately die in the brooder if not culled but you can try getting extra electrolytes and/or nutridrench in its system to see if it perks up
