Thanks guys that’s one of the colors I was hoping to get and he’s my only one. All these males I have smh. Everyone that’s interested doesn’t want males

I got the strawberry bed cleaned out....taking a quick break and then getting all my seeds together to plant!

Anything special about this Italian has a lot more black and white markings then the others. And which color is this brown one

Do all the experienced quail keepers on this thread have a favorite article/website/whatever that explains Coturnix varieties and the genetics behind them? I am having a tough time finding good info that doesn't contradict others. Thanks!

The Italian hen is just a variation, like some ppl are more tan as others, as far as I experienced.

The brown one is very interessting, but unfortunately I have no specific genetic explaination, ... only that extended brown is incomplete dominant and something uncommon is mixed with it. But really nice!

I think Scrappy may actually have some African Coturnix in him, as he has a very dark face compared to a regular Japanese Quail of the Pharaoh morph. He does have the regular Japanese Quail crow.

I just thought about it and looked more intensiv in the pic... and just think it can be more a Pansy/Italian mix

As with any lineage with multiple species involved, your may have a bit of a different proportion of each species. Seems coturnix are just super variable too! Lovely dude

Scrappy: "Meh, I slep."

On a more serious note, that is fascinating. =o So Japanese and the migratory Common Quail are essentially super hybrids? Makes the fact that Common Quail migrate and breed both in Europe and Africa possibly an adaptation to keep genetic diversity perhaps? XD Either way, I adore Scrappy's interesting plumage, though he has about as much migratory instinct as a rock.
